Emerging Opportunities for Established Beginning Farmers

Our keynote speaker will be Rob Salamida, owner/founder of The Rob Salamida Co, Inc. Rob will talk about his experience in starting his marinade business, working through NYS and local regulations and lessons he has learned along the way.
Our morning will focus on farm to institution & restaurant as an emerging opportunity for fruit, vegetable, and meat producers. Many local restaurants are now featuring local ingredients on their menus. Broome-Tioga BOCES has enacted a NY Thursdays menu. 10 districts participate in this program which features a day on the menu once per month which is all local. Come and learn how you can start selling to schools, what’s required and talk with buyers and chefs.
Our afternoon will focus on starting a successful value-added food business. This is a great way to not only extend your season, but also your income potential. Come and hear from local and state agencies, Nelson Farms (a co-packer) and a local blueberry farmer who has started making blueberry bbq sauce at a commercial scale. We’ll also hear from TASTE NY, the Broome County Regional Farmers Market and the Broome County Commercial Kitchen.
We are also sponsoring a day long track focused on good agriculture labor management strategies, including hiring, training and evaluation, and workplace rewards and incentive programs for when money is tight.
